4 Steps to Get Your HVAC System Ready for Winter
Winter is almost here, and that means it’s only a matter of time before you will need to turn on your heating system until Spring. That’s right, colder weather is coming whether you want it to or not, but there are some steps you can take to get ready. If you want to get your HVAC system ready for winter, the team at JMS Enterprises has a few steps you can take before you turn on your heat.
Change Your Filter
While HVAC technicians recommend changing your filter every 3 months, we know this task often falls by the wayside. If you haven’t changed your filter in a while, we won’t judge you, but we will recommend that you do so before you switch your HVAC system over to heat. A clogged filter not only reduces the efficiency of your entire system – costing you more money on your heating bills – it can also spread dust, mold spores, dander, and other allergens around your home.
Test Your Thermostat & Igniter
You don’t want to wait until the weather gets cold to find out your heating system isn’t working. While temperatures are still above freezing, you can give your HVAC system a quick test. Switch it over to heat, set the temperature a few degrees higher than the current room temperature, and see if it kicks on. If it does, you have confirmed that your thermostat and igniter are in good working order. If not, you will have plenty of time to schedule a service appointment before temperatures really start dropping.
Cover Up The AC Condenser Unit
Once you’re ready to shut off your air conditioning for the year, it’s a good idea to inspect your condenser unit (the outdoor portion of your HVAC system). Give it a good once-over to look for leaks or obstructions inside the fan housing. If everything looks good, wrap up the entire unit with a plastic trash bag and secure it in place with tape. This will give your condenser unit some protection from the harsh winter elements and prevent debris from falling inside.
Schedule An Air Duct Cleaning
Your air ducts are the perfect place for bacteria, mold, and mildew to grow, and once the heat comes on, they will be able to grow even faster. HVAC technicians recommend getting your air ducts cleaned every 2-3 years, or more frequently if you have pets or other air quality issues. Air duct cleaning is a simple process that can improve the air quality in your home, save you money on heating bills, and reduce wear and tear on your HVAC system.
