How to Maintain Your Shag Area Rug

Shake It Out!

Vacuum Regularly
You can effectively use your standard vacuum cleaner on a shag area rug, but we suggest changing out the standard carpet attachment for an upholstery brush. The beater bar on your vacuum’s carpet attachment can pull on those long shag fibers, causing damage. Your upholstery brush will be much gentler, and although it will take some time, the results will be well worth the effort.
Spot Treat Stains
Because of their high pile, shag rugs tend to soak up anything you spill on them. You can use a commercial rug cleaning solution to remove them, or you can try diluting a few drops of dish liquid in a cup of water. Dab any stains with a towel soaked in your cleaning solution, then rinse with clean water and blot the area with a clean, dry towel. When you’re done, hang it up to dry so it won’t get musty. Once it is dry, you can fluff the pile so it blends in with the rest of the rug.
