How to Make Your HVAC System Run More Efficiently

January 10th, 2020

During those cold winters we experience in the Bucks County, Montgomery County, and Delaware County, heating bills are always a concern for homeowners in the area.  You can try turning down the thermostat but that can only do so much if your HVAC system isn’t running at full efficiency. There are lots of little things that can bog down your HVAC unit, including dust buildup, improperly sealed ducts, and lack of insulation in your home.  At JMS Enterprises, we offer a wide range of home services, including air duct cleaning, that can make your HVAC system run more efficiently. Here are our top tips for getting the best bang for your buck from your heating and cooling unit.

Programmable Thermostats

While this won’t do anything to change the way your HVAC system runs, it will save you money on your energy bills.  If you don’t have programmable thermostats, a small investment here could reduce your costs in the long run. If you already have them installed, be sure to program them for maximum efficiency.  Try setting them to a lower temperature during the time you spend at work or when you’re asleep for best results.

Insulating Your Home

Once again, this doesn’t affect the HVAC unit directly but it can help trap heat in your home so it doesn’t have to work so hard.  Attic spaces are a prime culprit for lost heat in the winter, so installing some insulation up there will prevent heat from escaping via the roof.

Duct Sealing

If your ducts are older, it’s likely they have some places where heat can escape.  Holes in the ducts, gaps between junctions, and deteriorated sealing tape can all create an avenue for lost heat.  Start with any exposed ducts, examining them for leaks and sealing them with tape or spray sealant. If you still have problems, it may be appropriate to call in the professionals for a duct repair.

Air Duct Cleaning

If your air ducts have never been cleaned, it’s possible they’re holding on to a lot of buildup.  Not only can a thick mat of hair, dander, dust mites, and mildew wreck the air quality in your home, it can also force your HVAC system to work harder pushing air through your ducts.  It’s a good practice to get your ducts cleaned every 2-3 years to prevent buildup and make your HVAC system run more efficiently. That way, you’ll get better heating with less energy use.

While JMS Enterprises may not be able to help you install thermostats or insulation, we’ve been the preferred professional air duct cleaning service for resident of Bucks County, Montgomery County, and Delaware County for nearly four decades.  If your air ducts are suffering from a buildup of dust, give us a call at (215) 706-0188.  We’ll get your ducts cleaned out using the latest equipment so you can breathe easy in your home and keep things nice and toasty with lower heating bills.  Get in touch with us for a free estimate today!
