Why You Should Vacuum Your Area Rugs Regularly

Take a look at your area rugs. Are you happy with what you see? We know it’s a chore, but regular vacuuming not only keeps your area rugs looking cleaner, but it can also significantly increase their longevity. Area rugs, Persian rugs, and Oriental rugs are an investment, and if you want to keep that investment looking brand new for many years to come, a little maintenance goes a long way. Here are some reasons why you should vacuum your area rugs regularly, straight from the professional area rug cleaners at JMS Enterprises.

Area Rug Construction

Whether it’s a bound carpet remnant or a multi-thousand-dollar Persian rug, area rugs generally have a backing to which the rug fibers are attached. Carpet backing is usually a grid made from plastic or rubber, while more expensive rugs are woven on a loom, hand-tufted, or hand-knotted onto natural fibers. Rug fibers can be made of fine wool or any of a number of less expensive natural and synthetic materials. No matter what your rug is made from, caring for it will involve the same steps: regular vacuuming and less frequent professional cleanings.

Why Vacuuming Is Important

Dirt is made up of all kinds of particles, and some of them can be damaging to your rugs. The dirt and dust in your home can contain tiny bits of rock, sand, wood, metal, glass, and more. All of these particles are abrasive, and if you don’t get them out of your rugs, they will act just like sandpaper. As you walk on your rugs, abrasive particles will gradually wear away at the fibers until they start to come loose. They can even damage the backing, causing your rug to fall apart from the inside out.

If you want to remove abrasive dirt, vacuuming is part of that equation. Unfortunately vacuuming a few times per year isn’t going to get the job done. While occasional vacuuming will get rid of surface dirt, it won’t remove those deep-down particles that cause the most damage. The longer you leave that dirt on your rugs, the further down into the fibers it will work. Once it’s down there, no amount of vacuuming will remove it and professional cleaning and repair are your only options.

How Often Should You Vacuum Area Rugs?

Professional rug and carpet cleaners recommend vacuuming your rugs twice per week, or no less than once per week. This will remove surface dirt to ensure it doesn’t work its way deeper into your rug fibers. Your vacuuming should also be supplemented by a professional cleaning once per year to get rid of fine particles that have made their way to the backing. One more thing – if you think you can achieve the same results with a rental carpet cleaning machine, think again. These rental machines are not powerful enough to remove anything other than surface dirt. You will get much better results from a professional cleaning, and it may be more affordable than you think.
